Measures to Avoid an Even Worse Crisis
Among the short-term actions in progress to try to guarantee the crops that starts next September are the diplomacy of
inputs, with direct contacts by Minister Tereza Cristina with suppliers abroad. There is also the “caravan of fertilizers”,
an initiative promoted by Embrapa with the objective of transferring to farmers techniques for more effective use of
fertilizers. In addition, on March 11th, the National Fertilizer Plan was launched. One of its goals is to reduce total imports
from the current 85% to 50% by 2050. Organizers plan to complete that using organomineral fertilizers (organic
fertilizers enriched with minerals) and remineralizers (rock dust), in addition to the increase in the exploitation of mineral
deposits for agricultural purposes.
